It's most likely in quotations because the gossip magazines were really the only ones that ever said they were in a relationship and pictures of them together were only during production of the movie. So you can't really "split" from someone you were never with.

It was framed that they were overly affectionate despite his left wrist and her right wrist are handcuffed together while filming so that’s why her hand is on his stomach.
