I am so sorry 😞 it’s unfortunate how the Latin community especially those who are super conservative and religious are very transphobic send you love

I wish I can do this in colombia. I am half Indigenous Colombian and half Spanish sadly I never really got to dive into the tribe my great grandmother was from. My dad told me she would wear her indigenous dresses and my great grandfather would acclimate more into the Anglo European style and wear suits.

If you're interested in your indigenous roots, but don't know where to start, find a local pow wow you can attend. I know a lot of people are scared to go because they're not [insert specific tribe here], but everyone is welcome! A lot of people were taken from their tribes by illegal adoptions or forced away from their culture due to colonialism so going to pow wows is a great way to reconnect <3

as i've grown older i've definitely become more interested in my motherland's culture, specifically how my ancestors were pre-spanish colonialism. i've already bought a few books on it and it's been great learning about and getting in touch with all the things i never knew.

I didn’t have any interest in learning about my family’s roots and culture until college. I now regret all the years I wasted when I could have been asking my grandparents about their lives and what it was like for them to emigrate.

This is marcos' lackey she's working with so I won't be surprised if it's the taxpayers paying for it.

I haven’t gone back to the Philippines since 2001 but my family is planning a big group trip for next year. I haven’t dug deep into our roots though. All I know is that my lolo’s lola lived well into her 100s and my lola’s sisters are in their 90s now, so I’m hoping we get blessed with the long (and healthy) life gene too 🥲

I haven't gone back for a while, either, esp. with Duterte and the extra-judicial killing stuff. My uncle was involved in some shady dealings and was killed for it - that was a long time ago now, but I know the area his family lives in still has a lot of those people around and I'm too paranoid to risk it.

Fortunately we have huge expat Filipino communities here and a lot of people know each other from there. Today I got to explain to a friend why Filipinos point at things with their lips, so I'm doing my part to keep the culture alive.

The “dun” lips lmao 😭

I wanted to go back last year, but my mom said election season was apparently a dangerous time to go? I don’t keep up with their politics but I trust her judgment since she and my family left after the People Power Revolution. So sorry to hear about your uncle too. I’ve heard similar stories from family friends over the years. I think it’s a common fear among Filipinos and it shouldn’t have to be that way.
