WOC and Best Actress Nominations at the Academy Awards

Mar 15, 2023 16:48

It is honestly fairly shocking that after Michelle Yeoh's recent Best Actress win, only two WOC have won Best Actress at the Academy Awards. This is a look at the women who have been nominated for the award (still bleak).

Angela should have won this year for SA and JLC’s spot should have been given to Nina Hoss from Tar!

I'm surprised people mentioned Nina Hoss for BSA cause similarly to JLC didn't do much either to merit a nom/win.

I would've snuck in Dolly De Leon for Triangle of Sadness.

Idk! I thought she was a standout in the film.

I didn’t see TOS though. But I’m sure Dolly deserved it more than JLC.

Dolly is such an inspired casting, too. She's an underrated gem from acting circles here, with theater training and all.

I think that due to racist studios/society and shaky record keeping over the years that we’ll never actually know how many POC have been nominated/won. Look at Vivien Leigh- she was of Parsi descent and was nominated and won but was white passing.

I'm so shocked learning about Vivian's ancestry cause I know this was born in India but I assumed~ both her parents were white Brits cause colonialism. And Vivian herself didn't look ethnic.

Julie Christie was born in India too cause of colonialism.

Another decade passed before another Black actress would be nominated

I'm pretty sure the decade is the time btwn the 1974 Diahann nomination and Whoopi's 1985 nomination, not Whoopi's and Angela's.

1974
1985
Another decade passed before
1993
Look, basically another decade has passed before

i think youre just mixing up whats written because its almost repeated statements. they wrote "basically another decade" between 1985 and 1993 noms.

This is why it's important to think of the Oscars as a WHITE awards show.
