So those weird racist comments about ADA, the tone-deaf response to the nepo baby issue, and posting an image containing naked child to social media were all decisions she made while...sober.

“And yet to de-gender the [categories] also, I’m concerned will diminish the opportunities for more women, which is something I also have been working hard to try to promote.”

this is kinda my argument for this. i mean case in point the genderless best director category. almost always men

The Brit awards did away with gendered categories for this years awards, and it ended up with the “Best Artist” category being all male: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/jan/16/brit-awards-all-male-best-artist-category-reveals-wider-music-industry-sickness

two women have been nominated for best cinematography during the oscars entire existence, no wins. iirc in editing, women have faired better with 12 wins, but still.

Honestly I do think that adding a third non-binary category is the best option, at least in the short term. It will force studios to actually campaign and promote those movies bc they like to win awards, it'll force orgs like the Academy to watch movies with nb leads and supporting actors, just in order to fill the category, and it'll make trans and/or enby actors visible in a really significant way. With the way that trans men and women are already excluded from most award shows from the actor/actress categories, a third category seems like the best way to increase visibility and is, imo, the best chance to make the change for trans men and women to get more visibility too.

I can imagine a future where the acting categories are also genderless, but if the change was to happen right now it would just be men winning, so something else has to happen to push the change - and a third category is more likely to make it happen sooner than just waiting for society to watch up (or all the old white men in the Academy to die).

Yeah, as much as I don't like the idea of another category that will serve to "separate" trans actors/actresses from the other artists, I think that might be the answer.

They didn’t have gendered acting awards at the Independent Spirit Awards and the women won the majority of the categories

It’s the independent spirit awards tho so not as old and crusty as the oscars
