You either discuss getting engaged beforehand like mature adults but phrase it as "propose to each other" to make you sound less like people making marriage a business transaction, or... you go the passionate teenager route and yell "but i was going to propose to you!!!!!!!" when the first person starts their speech and fully hijack the spectacle to make it all about you.

(The latter one is my favorite to watch.)

MTE. I imagine it's when you have 'the talk' and decide to get married but feel 'we proposed to one another' sounds more romantic.
