I finally watched Everything Everywhere and uhhh I think there’s just too much hype because I found it to be interesting but not great. I was really surprised how juvenile the humor was, shocked all these film snobs are praising it when like the butt plug stuff was straight out of a 2000s Will Ferrel/John C Reily movie. The everything bagel bit felt like a rejected guardians of the galaxy joke too. Best thing I can say about it is the acting, everyone really was great(although Jamie Lee should be nowhere near an oscars nom) ultimately I’m glad to see the oscars get out of their box and recognize a different type of movie, even if I have no desire to ever watch it again lol

I do like the film, but the funny thing about it is that it's only considered indie cause of the A24 label (and the budget) but style of it is very much of a mainstream film you would've seen in the early-mid 2000s but with an all white cast.

Yeah, I liked it a lot but I am definitely surprised at how much hype it's built up. I was watching someone in front of me on a flight watching it yesterday, and it reminded me how much the last fight draaaaagged. Like, I loved the concept, I thought it was clever and funny, and I liked the acting, but I think it could have been tighter, and I could have done without the butt plug stuff entirely, lol.

I don't care about a juvenile joke when the rest of the movie is more mature, but it did need an editor at points. I still like it,but it's quite exhausting, and that's why it's not my favorite movie of the year.

I haven't seen Women Talking or Till yet, so I can't speak to those categories. I think EEAAO was so well acted though, I mean to go from kind of goofy graphic novel type action and comedy to full drama back and forth and still have it feel genuine in both feels like an achievement on its own. I know roles that are drama from front to back usually get recognized more, but I think they deserve even more credit for bringing all those layers to one role.

I hope at the SAGs and Oscars there are shakeups in the Lead Actor, Actress and Supporting Actress categories!!

I like Austin but I want Colin to win.

Industry voters may not see the effort in her effortless turn. Says Kwan: “I think she talks about our movie in a way that kind of diminishes what she did.”

awww i can see this. because michelle praises the daniels as geniuses so much and them writing the role to allow her to show so much of her abilities, people think its the movie that makes her performance rather than her performance that makes the movie. and while i love EEAAO, i do think its the acting performances first and everything else second.

The voters are so narrow-minded when it comes to performances that are out of the box or not drama.

i think it also works against her that she's in an absurdist comedy, ppl are so dismissive of comedies in general even though (imo) it can be harder to be a good comedic actor compared to a good dramatic actor. i've seen so many ppl say that cate blanchett gave the "objectively better" performance and i'm like... objectively how??

even here on ontd, iirc there were a couple of ppl complaining that EEAAO was classified as a comedy for the GGs and i think it's bc ppl/the industry are primed to see comedies as "less than" dramas.
