Keanu Reeves Confirms His Film Contracts Ban Digital Edits to His Acting

Feb 15, 2023 10:18

“You lose your agency," says Keanu Reeves about deepfakes. “When you give a performance in a film, you know you’re going to be edited, but you’re participating in that. If you go into deepfake land, it has none of your points of view. That’s scary.” https://t.co/MWrvU7d3Wx

The original interview is really good. And the deepfake stuff is creepy as hell.

Should I be worried about AIs coming for my job?

Reeves: The people who are paying you for your art would rather not pay you. They’re actively seeking a way around you, because artists are tricky. Humans are messy.

We push back, we have our own ideas.

Reeves: People in power don’t want that, you know? So that’s not your lifetime, that’s like your next birthday. And before then, they’re going to challenge how much they pay you. So everyone’s gonna be an independent worker. "Look at all the independence you have! Let’s not have unions."

Everything deepfake, AI related gives me so much anxiety that if I think about it for more than 5 seconds I start freaking out

This is very smart.

I'm sure he has a lot more say than other actors, tho

It probably helps other actors at least knowing this is a thing you can put in your contract at all. It would probably be best if this would become an industry wide rule through like unions and such, but when you have international productions it's probably also a good thing to have this clause in your individual contract.

I really appreciate him and other celebs who are doing their research and being vocal about being against these deepfakes tbh. Far too many people are only seeing the benefits of this and purposely ignoring the real-time determent it's causing folks (ie the recent Twitch drama)

I've literally never seen a single person say something positive about deepfakes or talk about their benefits?

I mean, there was/is a lot of recent discussion about its benefits when it was revealed studios were adding/altering Bruce Willis in films despite his deteriorating health. I can imagine Keanu, who's seems at least to be more aware of the VFX industry more than his peers, caught wind of that and worked with his folks to stop from being taken advantage of like that

... but it didn't work, because the Bruce Willis thing was VERY noticeable, and VERY shit?

It would be different in that case if people were praising the end result, but they didn't ...

"we’re gonna be confronted by the value of real, or the non-value"

lbr he's right and people've been discussing this issue for a while but only now the ramifications are being realized imo
