To elaborate they said we only travel within our country which can be true but they meant it as it was because we’re not close enough to the rest of the lushly cultured world* 🤣

It’s wild to me that people think all Americans are alike, there’s over 330 million people here and considering the size of the country, it’s easier for me to travel to Europe than it is to California. I can fly to the Caribbeans easier too.

ok is this why Brits always vacation in the same fuckin' places at resorts where all they do is eat resort food?!

or maybe how stag do or hen dos are basically just a party weekend in Amsterdam or Prague or wherever and isn't an actual cultural exchange?

lmaooo

It’s so funny cause the easiest tourist to spot in those places is a British tourist imo and I’m sure the same can be said about Americans. We’re the same in all the bad ways 🤣

I was so confused cause like what did they think is on the rest of the American continents. They said “we’re next door to Europe and Africa” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 and I was like “you going to Paris or Casablanca is no different from me going to Toronto or São Paulo”

Me: *overweight, overheating in mild 80F, so pale was once called “White Tights” in high school because the boy calling for my attention thought I was wearing them (but it was my actual skin)*

British person I met learning I’m from California: “Do you surf?”

Me: “I sure do! Did my visible athleticism and sun-friendly complexion give that away?”

Them (understanding sarcasm far faster than logic): “no need to be rude!”

What you mean you don’t wear bikinis all the time in the sunshine and beach playing volleyball?

The amount of Baywatch-centric questions travelers were asking in the early 2000s was a bit puzzling until I later learned how popular Baywatch was internationally.

(But still puzzling because I don’t give off any beach bunny vibes.)

lol I remember being in France circa 2001 and my host family would watch Alerte à Malibu.

This was totally from 2000 or 2001.

The French title makes more sense than Baywatch because… not really a bay. The worldwide love boggles my mind but maybe the effect of translation improves upon the inanity of it?

Ma'am, this conversation isn't for you.

Because my anecdote about British stupidity tipped off that I am not black?

Bagging on British stupidity is a conversation for everyone in the community.

Asking if you have a hobby isn't stupid. Talking about how pale you are in post that's about anti-black racism is just silly.

Asking if I had that particular hobby was dim-witted. Policing an anecdote (where establishing skin color is relevant, which is rare, but is the crux of what made the question so dim-witted) in tangent, sub-thread on a post about Idris Elba’s thoughts on his own identity, on a celebrity gossip forum where users mostly make jokes… is also silly.

My anecdote is not intended to make anyone on ONTD feel badly about themselves - is that how it reads to you?

americans say the dumbest shit and think europe is a country so it was a pretty weak anecdote that someone thought overweight people can surf

This might totally surprise you, but I’m not a professional comedian or writer 🥲
