enouuuuuuuuuuugh

Season 1 was the only one that was really great. Seasons 2 and 4 were watchable but full of dumb subplots. Season 3 had Jimmy Smits, but other than that was a bore. Everything else was a mess.

(the season with Colin Hanks was so cheesy that it was kinda fun, but still, not actually good)

Didn’t they once do a flashback with him playing a younger Dexter and it was hilarious?

It always bugged me how Dexter made out he had no feelings, while clearly expressing feelings on a regular basis. How would someone with no feelings even give a shit about keeping a “kill no innocent people” promise that he made to his deceased dad? Keeping a promise like that requires at least a single feeling, Dexter!

I think that it was kind of on purpose (at least in the early seasons): Harry THOUGHT Dexter had no feelings, and that's why Dexter thought so too, because that's what he was taught, but he actually did; he just wasn't aware what feelings are and how to process them.

There are many examples of him having feelings in the series, as you said, for example, when he attacked Rita's ex-husband when he talked shit about her - there's no explanation for that other than feelings. I think this was intentional of the writers.

but the bad writing in later seasons kind of made all that a mess (especially when they added the psychologist who supposedly helped create the code or whatever; one would think she'd be able to tell he does have feelings, but oh well)

sorry for the wall of text

A lot of the code is built to prevent him from being caught while satisfying his urges.

The original author said this: "It's not out of the goodness of his heart, nor is it to make the world a better place. Dexter simply thinks that it's better, as well as safer, to kill criminals instead of innocents."

Oh definitely, but he always spoke like he was honouring Harry too, but if he had no emotions, he wouldn’t care
