Lizzo tweets "cancel culture is appropriation"

Jan 09, 2023 18:43

This may be a random time to say this but it’s on my heart.. cancel culture is appropriation.

There was real outrage from truly marginalized people and now it’s become trendy, misused and misdirected.

I hope we can phase out of this & focus our outrage on the real problems.

I'm not sure if she is saying that rebranding accountability as "cancel culture" is wrong as it undermines the real harm being called out by those in marginalized communities to those in positions of privilege (which I 100000% agree with) or if she is saying that "canceling" someone is appropriation as it shuts down someone who should be allowed to talk (which I 10000% disagree with).

I feel like the wording makes it ambiguous so that it can be both harmful to those doing the work and weaponized by those who will claim "look, a Black woman says we shouldn't be canceled so it's proof we can say racist sexist stuff with permission!"

(I really hope she's on the good side as I so much want to like her and feel like the johnny debt fans part already broke my mood so often!)

i think she means this has been appropriated by people in positions of relative privilege for self-serving means. eg using language of cancel culture to justify bullying people you don't like, out of boredom or over petty grievances

I don't quite understand what she's saying. There has always been misused and misdirected outrage. Conservatives are constantly mad about some shit that they made up. On the flip side, a lot of times, the "oh, people will just get mad about ANYTHING these days" rhetoric is used when some of the most marginalized people are making concerns known, and no one wants to listen.

To me, one of the problems with the phrase "cancel culture" is that different people mean different things. Some are referring to people facing material consequences. Some mean people being dogpiled and harassed, and some just consider any criticism to be "cancelling."

I mean, it's hard to parse out what she really means here, like I need her to explain which cancel culture she's talking about, like bad faith actors trying to misrepresent accountability or cancel culture like people holding her feet to the fire for calling Chris Brown her favorite person?

this! immediately i thought of her bigging up chris brown and, as a woman, i don't want to hear someone doing that saying that i'm "appropriating" something when i say men that abuse women in any and all forms should not get to hold positions of influence and power.

people really need to first give their definition of "cancel culture" before they start bitching about it because that makes a difference.

I think the term "cancel culture" is wildly overused in general.

Holding people accountable isn't "canceling" them, so on that front, I agree, as it's become virtually meaningless as a phrase...and misused.
