lol who cares

i can't believe she has such thin skin to clarify. as op mentioned, she mentioned IN THE INTERVIEW that she was going to get misconstrued to cover her ass for when she inevitable would shove her big foot in her mouth. that said, this is a grown ass woman who has been in the industry for quite a while. maybe it's time to sign up for PR training 201? or just maybe think for a moment before blabbing whatever inane idea pops into her head like "oh i'm the first woman to be disliked" or whatever she's going to say next.

I don’t blame her for clarifying. I saw a lot of articles and posts mocking her over this.

But she’s famous, so she should speak perfectly and if she doesn’t, then never clarify, because famous people aren’t *real* humans.

This whole thing is a mess and I feel so bad for her. Like, it's OBVIOUS she didn't word it correctly, and what her intent was. Shame on the internet for dog piling on her, like that one Star Trek actress.

So people were giving her too much benefit of doubt assuming she was talking about YA movies lol.

Her comment didn't even get taken out of context, or misconstrued, she just said something dumb and people heard it and said she was dumb. Yeah it sucks but it's not some grand conspiracy.

there is a certain demographic who is obsessed with "firsts" and "representation" that constantly end up erasing the work of those before them bc they don't understand the deeper issues at play with marginalization. her point had nothing to do with being the "first" and imo the hunger games being a "YA" movie and not an "action" movie means that it still wasn't really marketed the way her blunder implied. the proof-positive being the extreme delays/reception of wonder woman, harley quinn, black widow, etc. movies. it's also a bit ridiculous given who she was talking to and the film she was responding to with that point bc it means she doesn't really get it on a deeper level, but that's not necessarily her fault.

anyways, the majority of the criticism she got was from male well-ackshullies and wasn't constructive but i repeat that these half-baked comments from celebrities do end up having longterm harm in the political consciousness of the public.

Her comment wasn't the worst in the world, but also- I've had my work repeatedly erased or downplayed by people making comments similar to hers. It's fucking exhausting and tiring when this happens to myself, especially when the person making the incorrect comment about being the first or only end up benefiting in a way I won't. Any corrections by myself or others that x person isn't the first or only or didn't do all the work get treated as petty.

Exactly. It's not uncommon and it's not random. It's a pattern of cultural thinking by that group of people. I'm sorry that you have to experience it firsthand.

People excusing or downplaying her comments contribute to the issue. I'm an East Asian woman, so maybe this is hitting differently for people. But I have been expected to be understanding and forgive or whatever when people do this even if it's repeatedly done.

I kind of feel for her because I’ve misspoken lots of times during important conversations, but damn, she needs better media training or something because she can’t keep doing this. Like she has to be crystal clear and use the correct words because an interview (or any professional conversation) is not the time to use hyperbole, exaggerate, or talk in a way that’s liable to be misconstrued when quoted.
