Squid game had some redeeming qualities in that it sparked a conversation on the failures of capitalism, and the characters were not based on real people or the plot on real events.

I don't know if it's really comparable to anything related to the ghoulish and disgusting true-crime-as-entertainment industry

That's valid. It can be hard to watch for a lot of people, though there is evidence that scary movies (I would imagine that includes violent thrillers and even saw movies) can help with emotion regulation

It's not for everybody, and it's important that the actors feel and actually are safe on set. Some productions do hire people to ensure that (at least they do for intimate scenes, not sure about violence though). I feel like as long as the cast and crew are safe and as long as it's not clearly ripped from the headlines or based on real victims, it can truly help some people cope with strong emotions
