Emilia Clarke: It’s outrageous just 16% of working creatives are working class

Nov 29, 2022 20:47

Emilia was speaking as patron of arts charity Open Door, which aims to address the perceived imbalance by supporting budding actors.
Clarke is calling for the public to support its Big Christmas Give challenge, with every donation doubled, to support “young talented people who don’t have financial support” to get into drama schools.

It has also received support from Matthew Lewis and Imelda Staunton, who both starred in Harry Potter, and Love Actually actress Dame Emma Thompson.

something about this is making me laugh because emma's also in HP

also aren't the brits notorious for this? in the US it's annoying ass talentless nepotism kids, in the UK it's rich and connected actors who need a pre-req in some drama school to be break into hollywood

The difference is that UK actors tend to be more talented and better trained.
Say what you want about Cumberbatch, Hiddleston, Foy, etc, but they are fantastic actors. Instead, the nepotism kids in the US (Maude Apatow, the Eastwood guy, Maya Hawke) add nothing new to the table and are kinda forgettable.
That is ofc no excuse for the lack of diversity in the UK film industry. We need more Julie Walters, James McAvoys and John Boyegas on screen. I remember Julie saying that thanks to arts programs funded by the government she was able to become an actress, but today all those programs no longer exist.

I am really tired of posh Brits on screen - you go look at their Wikipedia and they’re a descendant of Baron so and so and their grandfather was the Minister of something or other in Thatcher’s cabinet. Where are all the Kathy Burkes and Gary Oldmans (ew tho) and David Morrisseys these days? It’s all Eddie and Benedict and Emerald and Claire and Lily and a million other fancypants people who already have the advantages that so many others don’t.

I guess we have John Boyega and Paddy Considine, but that guy’s been around for over 20 years doing amazing work and only just now is starting to be really noticed. Also, Eddie Marsan needs to be recognised, Jebus.

I came here to make that exact Wikipedia comment. In their Early Life, Personal Life, and Family (if there is one) sections there’s so many blue underlined names it should have a seizure risk warning ( ... )

I wish more working class actors kept their accents too, especially the northern ones. I’ve lost count of how many northern actors have completely forced out their accents and it’s sad. I understand why actors like Ian McKellen did it, but it shouldn’t be necessary now.
