Last Week Tonight with John Oliver tackles the subject of the British Monarchy aka "the best thing to happen to white actors since literally everything else." ( Read more... )
I’ve been telling all y’all about this for years, including the duchy of cornwall bullshit but all you monarchy loving fuckers kept arguing with me about ~~~BuT tOuRiSm MoNeY~~~~
Hope you all will finally fucking listen. Abolish the fucking thing
Oh and I told y’all that old bitch was active in colonizing but I got a bunch of lmao she’s just a symbol! She’s like a celeb! She doesn’t do anything but cut ribbons! Rich people will get their land if you abolish the monarchy so let her live her cute old lady life! Nah, that racist old bag bones, now bag of dust, was actively involved in oppressing non-whites. Maybe you will learn to listen to this loud, annoying BROWN woman ☺️☺️☺️
Ngl, they had me fooled about the tourism money, but I've done a 180 and am all for burning it down now, to the ground. Take no prisoners. Charles is a monster and they're all irrelevant. Totally useless.
William has four residences and gets an allowance of £22 million a year, plus he gets a per diem when he goes to Wales or makes an appearance of something like £50,000, just for showing up somewhere to cut a ribbon. It's outrageous.
Another good quote by John: "a family whose name was branded into people's skin and who sit atop a pile of stolen wealth, wearing crowns adorned with other countries' treasures"
They need to go the way of France, keep the palaces open for tourism and get rid of these inbred goons. Absolutely ridiculous that today people can defend this bizarre institution that these people have divine rights and special treatment. Can't believe anyone in the UK could support this past 1960s
Also they’d probably get more money from tourism since now if you visited their residences or whatever you can only go to certain parts but if they didn’t live there you could open up more of it
I actually cried when he started to talk about Kenya. Kenya will have been independent for only 60 years next year. This bullshit effected my family down to my parents' generation, and by extension me from all the abuse and intergenerational trauma. As imperfect as this show and John are it means a lot, especially coming from a white British man, to have someone stand up and say uh actually the monarchy is and always has been extremely fucked up!
The handwaving of atrocities is something I'm kind of used to at this point? Like I'm consistently disappointed but not surprised when people want to justify being fans of them like what is there to admire?
also weirdly there are still british aristocrats or just rando british-blooded landowning families (who say they are "born and raised" in kenya) owning large pieces of land in the country and being super lowkey quiet about anything going on in their supposed country. i guess since i'm from another part of the developing world i find it to be odd phenomena.
my issue for sure with this and any royal family is that, say, they are a symbol-- in this case, as a head of state, then they have to be held accountable to the consequences to what their state does in their name as it is done on the symbol's behalf. exactly as john oliver mentions.

That's a great idea. I visited Petit Trianon (Marie's crib). I had no interest in going inside the gaudy palace
