Vulture did an in-depth interview with William H. Macy about the making of Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, and it's an excellent read. I pulled some tidbits out for the post, but I encourage you ( Read more... )

I think the weight of living was heavier on Phil than it is on other people... I don’t think there’s anything he couldn’t do.

This quote is so sad. 😢 PSH's death of one of those celeb passings that I don't think I'll ever be over.

Same, he was (and is) my favorite actor.

I know this is a little niche, but I thought it was a genuinely great interview and I wish there were more like it!

This looks like a great interview and he's right about the violence that passes the MPAA while a woman having sex, and god forbid enjoying herself, is seen as going too far.

His quote about PSH is so sad. What an enormous loss.

There was another movie he was in called The Cooler with Maria Bello where a scene where he went down on her had to be heavily edited because you got a glimpse of her pubic hair. Or that was the official excuse. Probably more because she was enjoying herself.

Well I'll have to go check that one out. I watched that documentary, This Film Is Not Yet Rated and they also talked about Blue Valentine getting an NC-17 because you can see Michelle's character receiving oral pleasure. ffs.

Yeah, that's where I remembered The Cooler info from haha. The MPAA really hates women on the receiving end, yet it was ok multiple times in Don't Worry Darling because I guess you can't see anything but her making some When Harry Met Sally-esque faces.

Lol at "Jiminy Christmas."

I've never seen Boogie Nights but I watched Magnolia and Licorice Pizza for the first time recently. I really disliked both for different reasons, which was disappointing because I LOVE There Will Be Blood and The Phantom Thread. So I guess PTA movies are just super hit or miss for me.

PSH was the best part of Magnolia, and generally the best part of everything he was in imo. And I thought Cooper Hoffman was so great in LP - he's one of the nepo babies I'm rooting for.

I disliked Boogie Nights and though Licorice Pizza was dumb. I've heard Tom Cruise's performance in Magnolia is very good but I realized I'm just not a fan of PTA. oh well

Magnolia is surprisingly great for being so long.

Magnolia is definitely Tom Cruise's best work of his career but if you don't like PTA lol yeah it's a very long movie

I freaking love this movie. Early Matthew McC (not going to attempt spelling his name). Early Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Edward Hermann. I even loved the Mickey Mouse Club song in the final scene when I was little. This is a campy favorite (along with Dead Man on Campus).

yesss that song rules, i do not care!

and omg dead man on campus is another fav. truly underrated. mike white said “what if the no homo frat boy type of comedy was actually kind of homo”

doesn’t hurt that tom everett scott and andrew lowery are both my tamara token type, aka ‘90s floppy-haired self-deprecating nice dorks (not Nice Guys, just actually NICE men lol)

Haha! Funny. I like an b-rated comedy that is just an easy watch. And now that I think about it, I think i remember hearing it was filmed at my alma mater. That would have been before I was there but increased my affinity for the movie (and the school, lol).
