It's honestly still so wild how little of an online impact this movie had, especially with the amount of money it made. Anyway I'll be treating these sequels the way I did the first movie: by not bothering to see them until it's cheap/free to stream lol and even then meh.

Left no cultural impression at all. Maybe a few Sigourney tree jokes and references (and my memory of it is so bad I genuinely wonder if I’m misremembering a plot point in typing that).

I can’t recall who but some time ago a comedian or meme-er or celeb of some kind made the commentary that it’s the highest grossing film but no one can even remember a single line of dialogue from the film. It makes me wonder who is clamouring for these sequels esp after all this time when what attracted people to the film is no longer even a little special, and the story/characters weren’t it, haven’t had lasting memory or fans, and for me personally didn’t require a continuation of their story. Def the luster and spectacle is gone and that’s what blinded people into seeing past a meh story and praising it.

Meanwhile, it did have an impact where it mattered: the theatres, the technology (which tends to be Cameron's focus) and Disney's park areas.

While I think Avatar was passable and the visuals did most of the heavy lifting, "online impact" doesn't mean much it it doesn't translate to concrete results.

Maybe online impact isn't the right term for it, but more the cultural zeitgeist in general. I think some might be intrigued to see what this sequel will bring, but if I were to ask anyone in my family or friendgroup or really ANYBODY what they remembered from this movie in terms of plot and story and not just THE VISUALS, compared to say something like Inception around the same time (although this is probably also a bad example who knows lol), I'd be met with blank stares.

But these definitely will make money, I don't doubt that.

This probably won’t flop but I wish it would because it’d be funny after all the shit talking he’s been doing.

Avatar alone covers the cost of anything he makes for the rest of his life. Also apparently the footage is pretty great in 3d. Can't wait.
