Voted for Jillian because it takes a special kind of delusion to pretend your barely teenage daughter ran away out of pique when actually you deliberately pimped her out to your younger husband, let him rape your only child, and then blamed HER when she got pregnant.
I really dislike the ghostwriter so in general, I only consider the first three Heaven books canon (the fourth book and the prequel are like bad fanfiction), but it was clear in Dark Angel that Tony's version of what happened was a bunch of horse shit. The only part that was definitely true in his version was when he admitted that he raped his 13 year old stepdaughter. All of the other stuff he said was crap.
Even if he did this all of his own volition, Jillian was still a horrible mother for letting her 13 year old CHILD run away while pregnant. What kind of delusional person would blame a pubescent girl for getting pregnant? But if you take Garden of Shadows into account, she's even more delusional and horrible for setting up the whole thing.

Right? With all his self-justification and lies, Tony still can't deny he raped Leigh. It makes me wonder just how much worse it actually was. I'll always be sad that we didn't get Andrews's version of Leigh's story.

Yep. And then pretending for so long that she had no idea why Leigh had gone or what happened to her.

Same. Even if she had told the exact same plot that we ended up, I feel like it would read so much less hacky than the way the ghostwriter did it.

Tony is a scumbag for multiple reasons but from a realistic point of view, he could have said anything since Leigh was not around to contradict him yet he chose to tell his own bio daughter that he raped her 13 year old mother. Even if Heaven chose to believe his twisted story that Leigh kept coming to him and voluntarily had sex with him subsequently (which I do not believe), that does not erase or justify the fact that he raped a child who was living under his roof as his stepdaughter. Like bro, do you even hear yourself

I can't decide between Corrine and Jillian. Corrine really believed that Cathy would forgive her for all the awful shit she did LIKE MURDERING HER OWN CHILD. And she really believed that she had outsmarted her father and his codicil when she came up with that arsenic plan. GURL.
Jillian, on the other hand, seemed to e delusional/in denial about everything. Even if you disregard the prequel, she lived in her own little world by the time Heaven met her.

She was never the brightest bulb in the box. Whatever brains Chris and Cathy inherited definitely came from their dad and he probably got them from Alicia (ignoring that Alicia's also Corinne's mother according to the ghostwriter).
I know, right? The girl who said "typing is soooooo hard" really thought she suddenly became a genius and came up with a bulletproof plan? During the confrontation scene where she brags about how she thought and thought and finally came up with a way to outfox her father, I had secondhand embarrassment. She was so proud of herself for coming up with this TERRIBLE plan.
IT DIDN'T EVEN WORK! She lost her children AND Malcolm made sure she couldn't have any babies with her new husband (which never made sense to me because that's stopping his family line from continuing, guess that's where Corinne gets HER brains from *lol*). The only reason Chris and Cathy are alive is because they took Carrie and ran; now Corinne's standing in this house where they were starved and tortured, bragging about her genius idea to the people she utterly failed to protect, in the metaphoric (soon to be literal) ruins of her dream!
Usually I get annoyed when adaptations add unnecessary drama to the source material, and there were moments when I didn't like the additions that were made to Garden of Shadows (it really wasn't necessary to have Malcolm strangle Garland rather than having a heart attack when he found Malcolm attacking Alicia). But having Corrine get pregnant and have an abortion? That felt like it was inserted to pad out the four episodes. Same goes for Mrs. Steiner's entire existence (although I did laugh at Olivia saying you can be arguing with your husband at breakfast and helping him bury a body that evening).

Would really love some book/movie adaptation recommendations. I'm watching this series now, and have watched the three movies Lifetime put out, but that is it. I see some discussions here with characters I am not familiar with.

If you are looking for VC Andrews books, I would recommend only the first three projects/series because those are the only ones she actually wrote. She died before she finished the Dollanganger and Casteel series so the family/publisher hired a ghostwriter to finish those and then had him write (ahem, copy) a lot more books in her name.
Dollanganger series: Flowers in the Attic Petals on the Wind If There Be Thorns Seeds of Yesterday Garden of Shadows
Adare: My Sweet Audrina (the ghostwriter put out a sequel to this a few years ago but it's garbage)
Casteel series: Heaven Dark Angel Fallen Hearts (VC Andrews started writing this book but it was finished by the ghost writer) Gates pf Paradise Web of Dreams

You’re welcome! I tried reading the Dawn and Ruby books but between the ghostwriter’s crappy imitation of VCA’s writing style and the recycled plots, I didn’t enjoy them. It was just way too formulaic and badly written.
The ghostwriter also released some more books from the Dollanganger series about ten years ago and they suuuuuuck.
