....is it though?

Like, it has definitely improved, but "leading the way" seems like much.

jessica alba was right from the beginning. Marvel, like Disney, are giving us crumbs and we're eating it up because we're used to not getting anything.

It's like Disney, putting a trans man and a gay man in that new Baymax series. Also that short film Pixar did. That cabin dude from Frozen, he was gay. But they have yet to introduce a lead that is part of the lgbtqia+ community. I doubt they ever will tbh.

Sure all of the above is better than nothing, but it's not enough.

Literally, come back after Strange World. Not to defend them, because it probably will be minimal, but it's animated, stated, and shown that the lead kid is gay.

Pretty sure that the marvel fanboys (if there are any and I'm sure there are) is what made her backtrack.

If Marvel is "leading the way", we're in trouble.

I fear they are because which studio is doing better than them in terms of diversity? 😔

I would probably say, everything else aside, DC. They've done quite a bit of racebending for characters that have lead their movies. Aquaman is originally pale and blonde, Deadshot (from my googling) is Spicy White, Black Canary and Barbara Gordon are initially white, and none of their LA counterparts are, and that's off the top of my head, bc I know there are more. It didn't take them 10 years to integrate more than 3 black people as side characters. It didn't take them 22 movies to make movies starring women or mostly female casts.

But IG I count it from an initial setup kind of thing. Marvel just throws so much at us right now because they know if one thing fails, there's something else shiny to distract them (that's probably starring a white person). It's a very focus-tested kind of diversity.

but then at the same time dc/wb are outright abusive to their POC talent and protect the offenders that engage in that abuse most flagrantly.

"Way ahead of everyone else"? Somehow I really don't think this is the case, even if we're just talking about mainstream media and huge companies.

I think Alba's comments lacked nuance and Jameela didn't actually address the nuance.

Love the hair colour though.
