I don't know how she would have faired vocally, but her/Cynthia as a pair would have looked much better. Ariana just looks so much younger than Cynthia.

Do you think Broadway will ever expand the type of voices they use? I feel like that's why I don't feel drawn toward musicals, because while I can appreciate the typical vocals, they're just not ones I go out of my way to listen to.

it takes the rare show/performer for them to change their sound. like the entire show has to not have that broadway sound for them to not pick someone with a “classic” voice. cynthia and jessie mueller are the most recent performances that come to mind (color purple & beautiful) that don’t fit that mold.

I think it'll depend on how writers/composers write their music. Right now, the whole "pop-rock Broadway" (i.e. Dear Evan Hansen, etc) is popular which dictates how musical theatre actors sing since actors are chosen by how the fit the work created and this voice differs to more classical sounding voices i.e. Barbara Cook singing in The Music Man. We need more of a diverse range of how composers write music in order to change how actors sing it. I think a good example of this is Passing Strange (blues rock musical written by a blues rock musician who refused to comply with typical Broadway sound).
