i recently served on a jury in a criminal case. i'm not surprised by any of this. i hope he gets max punishment and it's real funny how he ain't blind anymore.

this is a civil case though, so the penalty was the guilty verdict and the 500k. he's not going to jail over this. he wasn't even present for the trial.

What happens if you’re found guilty in a civil trial? Just pay money?

Yeah. It is easier to win a civil case (not that Cosby isn't criminally guilty!), but (at least in Ireland) you convict on a balance of probabilities. You can have reasonable doubt. But if it seems likely that it could be true you can vote guilty.

If the civil case is PRIOR to the criminal case its verdict can be used in the criminal case. If it is after the criminal case, the verdict can be used in the civil case. This is what happened with OJ Simpson, when he 'won' his criminal case for murder, they used the verdict and whatever else to win the civil case and Nicole's family won when they took him to civil court.
