The 75th Annual Tony Awards were held last night, and to be honest, they were a bit of a snooze. You can check out the winners here, but if you're interested in the performances featured on the broadcast from the Tony-winning A Strange Loop and Tony-nominated musicals Six, Paradise Square, The Music Man, and MJ, you can check them out below. MUSIC MAN - For the amount of choreography that they had, why was it still boring? Like almost over-choreographed. I heard that was a problem for the production as a whole (other than it being the music man).

I won't see the MJ musical because reasons, but damn those dancers are good. Dancing that specific style and making it look good is HARD.

The Tony Awards felt less sparkly than past shows, but I think the exhaustion of the pandemic, the constant COVID surges and trying to rebuild tracks when they have no understudies left because everyone is sick - you can feel it and that makes me sad because this is how a lot of people (low profile actors and ensemble) are making their livelihood (and health insurance) so no choice but to keep performing.

I commented to the friend that I was watching with that the MJ musical had to have been so difficult to cast. To find someone who physically looked like Michael AND be able to dance that well must have been a very tall order. The choreographer looked amazing.

That was the most charmless Music Man I've ever seen. Just nothing. And this is from someone who comfort watches Sutton's 2011 Tonys Anything Goes performance.

I never watched the Tony's but I saw that Ariana DeBose hosted it and I'm happy for her, hope she did a good job and enjoyed her time

It's been a while since I've gone to a show but, browsing their site, "A Strange Loop" has an unusually large amount of tickets still available through the summer. Is Broadway still that impacted?

Oh yeah. They only recently started posted grosses again -

Broadway grosses and attendance for week ending 6/5/22 are now available.https://t.co/X3fdMLfJBb

Some shows are doing incredible business - The Music Man, Hamilton, The Lion King, Wicked. But many of them are either barely scraping by or performing to half empty theaters.

A Strange Loop is a tough one. It's not the kind of show that is gonna attract a tourist audience like The Lion King, and will actively turn some people off due to content. I imagine it'll get a Tony bump, though. It does have discount codes available (or at least it did when I saw it last month), and it's reasonably full on average, so hopefully it can stay open through 2022.

i thought ariana was a good host (and had great costume changes). she has so much charisma

& of the musicals i saw, i thought they all did a good job picking the musical numbers to perform. paradise square doing like 30 seconds of paradise square and then joaquina getting the rest of the time to do let it burn was perfect

everyone at our watch party cracked tf up when lea came on to perform, that is not her skin color!!!!

and while i personally love six, i'm glad it did get some awards and of all musicals to win best musical over it, v happy for a strange loop. i'm prob a little salty because imo it would have won best new musical in 2020 against moulin rouge, but people will see six with or without that accolade.

I agree with you about Paradise Square because it showed the two things that were the shining stars of an otherwise not-so-great show (imo): the choreography/dancers and Joaquina.

I feel a little crazy because I can tell Joaquina prob sounds great doing the show (I've read about all the mid-song ovations!) but I thought she sounded kind of bad here?!? Like, powerful, for sure, but definitely not at the top of her game, probably because of doing this vocally demanding song 8 shows a week. But I am definitely in the minority on that and I hope the Tony boost can keep them open a bit longer.

Idk how Lea didn't feel silly being that orange, lol.

yeah she didn’t sound great on some of the higher notes but I’ve seen part of a bootleg and she sounded phenomenal so just an off night for her

I actually had a lot of fun last night with the show and the performances, Ariana should host everything she's so open and fun. I don't think I've smiled as hard as I did before in my life like I did during Billy Crystal's performance it was DELIGHTFUL. Aaah and the Spring Awakening performance brought back so many memories, they still sounded so great.
