I am not at all convinced he's actually going to buy Twitter and feel like he is just riding the dramatic sideshow of it all

he has not. he has agreed to buy it, and there is a $1b penalty if he backs out, but in order to purchase it, he will have to sell a great deal of his Tesla stock, which will make the stock fall in value. People are speculating that he will pay the fine because when he backs out, Tesla stock will shoot up in relief that he isn't going to liquidate, and then his net worth rises much more than the $1b penalty he paid out.

I could definitely see him playing this whole Twitter thing against Tesla all as a means of alleviating the pressure on Tesla's stock. I think he takes any hit to Tesla's valuation quite personally so I'm sure he's not happy with how much it's fallen lately.

Free speech includes the possibility of being pursued for saying hurtful/false things. So many people think of free speech as this right to say everything and it's just...not true.
