While his music is neutral to me, I wonder if it's also tied to him being right in the voting sweet spot:
I feel like he's the right demo for every voter... he is not-white but doesn't "act Black" for both the pretend-woke and the racists, he's attractive but seems cool to hang out with and too nice to steal your girlfriend for the biased and the ego-dudes, his music is catchy but non-threatening so it's never a political statement when he wins, and he hasn't been openly problematic in some way that has gotten him held accountable (oh sorry "cancelled" -eye roll) by anyone.
tbh it's a touchy subject but this is often the case for Black artists who win the big 4 Grammys. Jon Batiste, Esperanza Spalding, Herbie Hancock, H.E.R. And I feel bad because it shouldn't be held against them individually when it's a systemic issue of what the Grammys go for. This is why Megan's BNA win last year was a pleasant surprise.
Bruno is a songwriter, plays several instruments, is a great dancer and also an amazing singer. He is multitalented after all. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea and his work is def not revolutionay, but he is talented.
The other point is that Bruno LOVES to praise older artists/legends, even collaborating with them (Bootsy, Charlie Willson, Babyface, etc.). At the end of the day those people and their friends are a huge part of the voters.
Also, bonus points for being a straight men that sings about women.
Unorthodox Jukebox era, he won ONE. THAT should have been the era he did a huge sweep. Hit after hit after hit. THAT was his "thriller" era, so to speak.
I dunno why he did a major sweep during the 24k Magic era. That album is great and all, but that was not the year to sweep. It was like the Grammys wanted to play catchup.
Wasn't that the year Beyonce lost her awards to Bruno and Adele during the Lemonade era?
I really hate Anderson's humour, tbh. And by association, I have been hating Bruno's "jokes" too. Anderson is problematic and I think if there is any chance of Bruno getting cancelled it will come through Anderson.
His verse on Jazmine Sullivan's song was considered colorist by some:
"Forget it, momma told me put the kid in (Woah) So I did it (Yes) But that baby came out black as Samuel in Pulp Fiction (Woah) I'm light skin and (Woah), my grandaddy Indian You f***in' with my lineage and dividends (Come on) Peace and light, I wish you all the love (I wish all the love) Please get out my house, I'll call the cops I think I have spent my final buck (No more) I think I'm out to lunch"
He aso has some very crude/sexist jokes and other lyrics, like:
"If I call you a bitch It's 'cause you're my bitch And as long as no one else call you a bitch Then there won't be no problems, nah"
