I really thought that he would get killed off a lot sooner. I feel like the show runners are keeping him around because they want to maintain that connection to TVD/TO, but his actual presence isn't required for that four seasons in.

The show has established the main characters and their storylines enough that it can now stand on its own two feet without needing constant appearances/references to the previous two shows. I wish the show runners understood that and let go of the need to have Alaric around.

Of course, it doesn't help that the show is apparently on Grey's Anatomy time. We're on the fourth season but I think only about a year and a half has elapsed.

When the show started, I had hoped that once Caroline inevitably found a loophole/cure for the twins' Gemini merge, they would find a natural way to write Alaric out of the show. But at this point, I don't care if he retires, gets locked in a prison world, dies a horrible death, etc. I just want him to go away.
