I'm torn about it. He fucked things up for actual victims. Not only does it make it harder to come forward, but it also poisons potential jurists who are going to look at victims and think, "Maybe they're pulling a Smollett here." What he did was more than just lying to the cops. It also happened at a particularly sensitive time, given all the other shit happening with race and sexuality issues in the US. It could have led to other acts of violence.
On the other hand, we have too many people in jail. Give him a shit ton of community service and be done with it.

A white man has literally murdered people in front of people and become a hero. Jussie didn't murder anyone or even attack them. He used up time and resources no different than a white man fighting for his innocence (whether innocent or not).
I'm not about sending a clearly unwell man to jail instead of actually trying to help him. Using him as an excuse for police who weren't doing their jobs already to be happy that he's been jailed is sick imo. Yes, he used up time and resources but the police aren't going to be treating black and poc worse than they already were/are. It's already really fucking bad with people being murdered by police constantly and the police going out to do it again because they AREN'T getting in trouble.
He should get the same treatment a white man would. Period.
