Today in [pretends to be shocked] news, Russian coaches and athletes continue to face no consequences for doping.

Kamila Valieva was in the news last week for helping Russiathe Russian Olympic Committee secure a gold medal in the figure skating team event, and also two days later for drug test results coming in as positive for Trimetzidine ( ( Read more... )

The IOC had nothing to do with Richardson's situation. That was the USADA (initial suspension) and the US Track and Field (wasn't picked for the team). All American entities.

For the Russian figure skate, it seems like the IOC was leaning toward a ban, but the COS is the one that made the decision.

Yeah, the Russian Fed initially banned Valieva and then she appealed the ban and it was lifted a day later (and this was before the news actually broke afaik). Then the IOC got involved, along with WADA and they were pushing for the CAS to overrule the Russian decision to lift her ban. It's all very convoluted, but the IOC position has been pretty consistent that they don't plan to award medals or want her competing until the investigation is done, whether or not the doping was accidental but I think that's what's confusing people.

Even if she does compete and win, there is no guarantee she will actually get a medal because the decision on the doping might determine she was ineligible to compete in the first place, which makes the CAS decision even more ridiculous. Not getting to compete because your eligibility in question is a pretty standard consequence that athletes, even minors, should be prepared for so I just don't buy the idea that it would be psychologically damaging and that justifies letting her compete in the meantime.

If minors cannot be held accountable then minors shouldn’t be competing.

and Carolina Kostner ended up HOW LONG suspended and FOR WHAT?

for those who actually don't know.

Carolina Kostner was banned for almost 2 years from competing in ice skating because she lied that her boyfriend (also an athlete) was not home thus he could not take a doping test.

no, she lied to the anti-doping agency inspectors.

(i was never into ice skating so I don't know all the details, so some details might be wrong, so i'll jsut cp from Alex Schwarzer's wiki)

"Schwazer's girlfriend at the time of the offence, figure skater Carolina Kostner, later admitted to prosecutors in Bolzano that she had lied to inspectors from the World Anti-Doping Agency shortly before the 2012 Games when they visited her home looking for Schwazer, claiming that he was not there so he could avoid being tested."

I'm so angry about this. It is unfair to everyone. It is unfair to her that she was manipulated and given this drug (I can't imagine she sought it out and did it on the sly). She is young. Come back again and do it clean. Is she still testing positive? What is the point of these rules if we enforce them arbitrarily? What about Sha'Carri and the *several* other athletes (mostly black women) in track/field that were not allowed to participate without voluntarily medicating their hormones away???
