the one time I acquired a dog while in a relationship, on the day I adopted the dog, I told the ex definitively: this is my dog. If we break up, this is still my dog. You will never take my dog. we broke up like three years later lol and he remembered!! there was no discussion!

When I adopted my cat I thought of it more of our pet. My ex was like "You are going to pay for everything. It's your cat and if we break up it won't be messy." Which.... we did years later, but he suggested getting a cat and I thought we were going to get married. But, yeah, grateful he made a point of that now.

Absolutely. I've fortunately only ever been in relationships where we both clearly owned pets from prior to becoming involved, but it's still sad saying goodbye to an ex's pet - they didn't do anything wrong, after all. lol
