The rebrand would position the app as one of many products under a parent company overseeing groups like Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus, and more.

So they could just name the parent company and keep the FB name. After all, Alphabet is Google's parent company and ordinary people aren't saying "Let's Alphabet things!"

This might just be a marketing tactic.

I think its a keep stock prices solid tactic. Rename the main company on the exchange that gets traded but when FB does some new weekly atrocity that trends and gets dragged through the mud investors don't get shaky (and I know that rationally investors should know the difference but let's remember the stock market is really just a mood ring for a bunch of wealthy, douchey lemmings with finance degrees). Its craven as hell but surprised it's taken that long for them to do.

Fox Corp I think does the same as does Alphabet.
