Exactly what I was going to say. Some people will say it's sour grapes, but I disagree.

And probably the same consumer for the last 20+ years is still buying these magazines. They don’t seem to be interested in finding the new consumer. They know they’re over and passé.

While I agree with him on how race and sexuality affect Styles differently, I wouldn’t say he was the very first to do this. I mean, Eddie Izzard wasn’t using the same language we are now, but she was talking about gender fluidity and wearing dresses long before Porter. It feels like the main difference (aside from race) was how they approached it - Izzard didn’t seem to look at it from the high-fashion perspective as much as Porter does.

I don’t follow any of these people closely, so I may be completely off-base… please correct me if I’m wrong!

No, I definitely feel anyone saying, "I did it first!" is probably missing something in distant or recent history.

But it definitely leaves a bad taste in the mouth when someone privileged gets rewarded doubly for something POC, LGTBQ+, women, etc. don't.

There are definitely people who helped open the door for Billy to have that Ballgown moment but they aren't on the cover of Vogue either so I still think his point is valid.

Yeah, I think he can make his comments about sexuality and race without claiming to be a pioneer in gender presentation fluidity because that's obvious nonsense.

lol he’s not wrong but was he really the first one? I know nothing about fashion but I thought there were others before Billy

yeah i mean he might be talking about it in a different context but from the top of my head kurt cobain wore dresses quite a bit, nicky wire, brian molko, iggy pop had that famous shoot, mick jagger has worn some really nice looks imo.

idk billy porter enough to know when he 'started' wearing dresses publicly (out of character) - only in the recent years ive seen it here on ontd and in recent years ive also seen jonathan van ness, kid cudi, mark jacobs, jared leto, ezra miller++ in dresses.

so im not sure what he means by him being the first - is he a big celeb in the US and has he been known for his looks featuring dresses for a very long time? educate me ontd

That’s an extensive list, thank you

I guess he does mean it in a specific context, but the fact that he made it all about HIM is not exactly helping
