Continuing that she always has a tarot deck with her (...) and finally, many different crystals that she uses for protection, such as obsidian and crystal quartz.

Oh, so she's one of them quirky girls.

I think you’re overthinking it. Wealthy people are more likely to be into this because they have the money and time to buy a million crystals and practise this stuff.

Overthinking and projecting (my personal tagline) probably. I’ve also been reading waaay too much of this stuff lately that I’m starting to see patterns where there are none.

It’s okay! We all overthink sometimes about different stuff. I get what you mean though, happy people tend to think whatever magic thing they followed worked for them actually worked because, yeah they’re happy and successful.

Plus they probably get loads of people trying to rope them in that sort of thing (and I don't blame them as long as it's harmless! If someone wants to go and charge Anya Taylor-Joy an obscene amount for some tarot deck readings, they have my blessing lmao)

My thoughts on people who believe in crystals is just 'they're dumb/gullible', maybe I haven't thought enough on the subject lol.

adorno has a really great collection of essays on this subject, 'the stars down to earth'. it was written in the 50s & was abt the growing (at the time) popularity of newspaper horoscopes & their social implications / possible predisposition to neo-fascist ideology ( ... )

holy crap this is amazing! Thank you so much! I’ve only skimmed but already it gives a brilliant background and is eerily prescient to today.

I started reading about this stuff because of pockets of antivaxxers around Australia in areas which are a cross section of traditionally left, alternative leaning and fairly affluent ‘liberal’ conservatives. That’s nothing new, it’s been that way for years, but now they’re both using arguments from hard right sources which are then filtering into the mainstream through wellness influencers-particularly young white women. It’s the same in the US I think.

So you’re getting traditionally female spaces being kind of hijacked by these, mainly, right-wing male ideologies. It’s so insidious.

Listen I’ve got two crystals my friend gave me, I know my rising sign, I still think about this taro reading from when I was 15/16. I’m not immune or above seeking order out of chaos, like you said it’s a question of why certain people are being drawn to it and where it leads.

yes, that's what got me interested in this stuff too, the intersection of new age & politics!

did you read this piece? https://julesevans.medium.com/make-love-not-vaccines-why-are-new-age-hippies-so-anti-vax-7eef1d4e083d it's interesting, the guy talks abt how the phenomenon is global, it's both interesting & really scary.

100% co-sign. like i commented here, i use tarot & can v much see its benefits & am definitely not above any of this stuff, but that doesn't mean i want to consume it blindly!

Yes! It’s such a great read and I feel so sorry for people in the alternative medicine sphere who’re actually doing the right thing and are getting tarred with the same brush as antivaxxers. Especially the women, since we know conventional medicine is misogynistic af already.

I like what you said about taro giving you a different perspective. I agree, I think it and astrology too can be good ways for people to identify their values and how they see themselves. Thank you for teaching me so much in this thread! I may be on ONtDs spiritual shit list but it was worth it <3

I think you bring up very valid points and I'm pleasantly surprised that my shady little comment brought up actual discussion. The hippy dippy thing usually comes from a very privileged place and I'm absolutely not here for entertaining this type of idiocy by pretending it's anything other than bullshit for the sake of ~respecting differences. It's a free country so believe all you want but I'm not gonna act like this little fairytale isn't totally ridiculous.

And I am also not here for this ugly mongrel talk, missy!
