2021 Tony Awards

Sep 26, 2021 20:00

Calling all ONTD theater lovers (all 15 of us)! It's Tony night so let's discuss the winners, the losers, and the fashion.

If this picture doesn't sum up the juxtaposition of the Tony Awards, I don't know what does. Darlene Love, Matthew Morrison, Marissa Janet Winokur, Chester Gregory, and Kerry Butler perform at the Tony Awards.

NO WAY! I can't believe I missed it. I was looking forward to watching the performances (especially moulin rouge). The covid hiatus has gotten me slacked in keeping up.

I find it funny that two of Taylor Swift’s exes were up for the same award and lost.

Also, I’m kinda mad Hiddleston’s Coriolanus never got transferred to the states. That was a brilliant performance.

My friend’s friend is a producer on The Inheritance and they’re celebrating his win tonight. So exciting!

Sweeney Todd is definitely my fave musical, followed closely by Grease. Rest of top 5 would be Heathers, Hairspray, and Chicago, probably in that order. Honorable mentions are Book of Mormon and the Disney ones, especially The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. The only musical I’ve seen actually on Broadway is Aladdin and I was disappointed. I saw a touring version of Anastasia and it disappointed me too. I love the movie, and the stage version just lacked something for me.

I also love The Greatest Showman sfm if we’re counting movies, and Cinderella - either with Lesley Ann Warren (it’s the first one I saw!) or Brandy.

Also love Little Shop of Horrors, Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music, Kinky Boots, Les Mis, and Fiddler on the Roof. I like Wicked and Hamilton, but think they’re both overrated.

was this airing on TV anywhere?? I looked for it but only saw this 'broadway's back' special on from 9 - 11pm that wasn't the Tonys

Only the special aired on CBS. The awards ceremony was streamed on Paramount+.

Most of the winners were as predicted but I wasn’t expecting those big wins for The Inheritance, especially with the lukewarm reception it got on Broadway. Slave Play must have been so sure they had it in the bag cause they announced a return run prior to the Tonys and at a bigger theater too. I’m happy there were so many first time winners; especially Danny, he’s been over due for years!

Edit: I’m surprised the Broadway’s Back portion didn’t try to include a performance from all newly reopened shows. I’m guessing it was the individual shows’ producers call but it seems like it would have been great advertisement for everyone.

The return of Slave Play... LMAO. They tried with the timing. And I read that they can't use Tony Nominee if they didn't win. Once the Tony Awards® have been announced for a given season, you must discontinue the use of the Tony Award® designation on behalf of a recipient of a nomination who did not receive an award within 30 days following the date of the announcement. You may continue to use the Tony Award® designation on behalf of a recipient of an award in accordance with these rules.
