Why does a non-profit org need to have a fashion show?

I always wondered how non-profits operate and keep afloat. I'm gonna guess these dresses are auctioned off for charity or donations?

“what were you wearing?” a common question asked during fashion week but also an incredibly common question asked to survivors of sexual violence. that exact same sentence in a dramatically different context was asked to disempower and blame survivors. thats why Rise produced the first ever New York Fashion Week Survivor Fashion show with survivors and allies walking the runway reclaiming this sentence. so thankful for @amandangocnguyen and all the work she’s done.

in addition to what other commenters have said, it raises awareness for the cause and the proceeds from the ticket sales would go to the nonprofit. depending on the type of event, there might also be an auction or other opportunities for guests to make donations.

the dresses were likely donated for the fashion show, and i don't know anything about this one in particular, but sometimes venues will donate the use of their space to hold the event as well. in most cases, fundraisers like this end up making more money than they cost to put on.
