The doc will feature homemade videos made by Kilmer in the last 40 years, amongst other things. I did not know he has throat cancer, the documentary looks good and emotional. Premieres in theaters July 23rd and streaming on prime August 6.

Perry (Val) is a well written and fully realized character, which was kind of a miracle for a gay guy in a 2000s comedy.

However! Harry (RDJ) keeps reacting to any mention of Perry’s sexuality by acting disturbed or grossed out. On one hand, Harry is repeatedly established as a fucking idiot. On the other hand, he’s still the film’s empathetic lead and audience surrogate.

TLDR Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was wildly progressive for 2006 but RDJs character was casually homophobic in a way that wouldnt fly today.

thank you for educating me! i think val was great in the role and i remember liking his character but the whole of the movie always left me with a bad taste in my mouth what with the compounded sexism and rdj being as you said an empathetic lead. i remember "f**** gun" made go "wait am i laghing with or at idek"
