NYT prints a frankly insane ad featuring Gigi and Bella Hadid & Dua Lipa...

The situation the last couple of weeks has been insane to watch from a media and overall public narrative angle. In a plethora of lows, the New York Times always manages to pull through by going even lower and publishing the advert below:

I had to double-check that it was NYT and not the Post

There's precedent for publishing this sort of ad in a "respectable" newspaper - remember when Lorde got this full-page ad in the Washington Post?

Lorde accused of anti-semitism in full page Washington Post ad as fallout from cancelled Israel concert continues https://t.co/Hc7IoCi1yT pic.twitter.com/G9WDQ4zLVX

ETA: I wonder if they're focusing on young celebrities like Lorde, Dua, & the Hadids specifically because they're popular & influential with Gen Z/younger millennials - a cohort that is already significantly less supportive of Israel than their elders.

do we know what happened with wapo after this ad? like were there complaints/did they address it?

i don’t know what is possible but it’s like how can NYT be reprimanded for this shit aside from a defamation lawsuit. this really endangers their lives

Wouldn’t expect anything less from the NYT! So very on brand for them.

NYT really need the money huh. Is it legal to use their photos in an ad without their permission?

I was deeply disappointed to see a Jewish acquaintance like all of Debra Messing’s tweets why

No. You have a right to your image which is why editorial images of celebs (and non-celebs) are not usable for commercials. These certainly aren't rights-free images either, probably cannot even be licensed for commercial usage, adding a copyright violation on top of that.

Are there exceptions to politics, like in the US campaigns can use images of the opposing candidate? Can they argue that this isn't commercial use but political use or something? (and if our resident lawyers are present, even if they make the argument can they win using that argument?)

Yes, there’s something called the “newsworthiness defense” which means you can say you’re using the image for social or political purposes and not “commercial use.” It’s definitely not cut and dry, but has been used plenty of times before.
