Morrissey wrote some beautiful melodies and lyrics that I’ll think about and appreciate forever. I met him a few times at the now gone Virgin Megastore in Hollywood, and he was charming and would sit there and talk music and movies with me with no problem. This was just him shopping around, not as a store appearance. As the years have gone by though, he’s turned his romanticism into, or because of it, out of touch, ignorant, racist, and classist. He got old and lost touch of what made him stand out. Sad man, but in a gross way now. I wonder if my ex who had a huge “MOZ” tattoo on his back regrets it even more now? Heh.
His romanticism is an early 20th century one. Based on evasion, feints, elitism, obscurantism, ephebephilia, and is rooted in an Anglo-Germanic tradition that led directly to Ernst Roehm and the Nazi Party, but with a more English turn of mid-century Little Britain middle-class prejudices. I'm not joking. It wasn't so obvious in the 80s, when he first started. But over time, it flowered. He's exactly where he wanted to be.
Oh shut up Morrisey. Just shut the fuck up. Just be silent.
As for the Simpsons, if they insist on continuing at least find a sound-alike for Julie Kavner cause that woman's throat needs a rest. Marge sounds more like Patty and Selma every day.
