We kicking cardi out the race club cause she’s got long hair?? Bitch me too; my hair used to hit mid back when straightened (and then I cut it off because as a natural that much length is just a hassle. Ain’t no one got hours to sit around and twist and braid all that) and I’m Blackity black Black.

Who told people black women can’t have long hair?

Edit: Okay I actually watched the video and? Cardi absolutely has “textured but straightened right now” hair? So this is truly about length, huh?

I feel like black people are told they can’t grow natural long hair and that it’s due to genetics when really for years we’re told that our natural texture is unacceptable and must be tamed into submission and are dissuaded from learning proper care techniques

So when you have broken, unhealthy hair, you’re more likely to seek products to “fix” it when you’re actually just not accustomed to working with your hair
There’s a reason why black women on average spend more on haircare than any other race

my white trumpian MIL truly believes black people cant grow their hair, that its just super super short and anything longer is all wigs and weaves 😫 theres no convincing her otherwise. i thought she was special in thinking this as ive never heard anything like this before, but i guess not...

i know she spends way too much time arguing with randoms on twitter over random shit but i can’t blame her at all for this one, people on there are constantly trying to invalidate her afro-latina identity for one reason or another. must be exhausting

Well cardi herself didn't identify as black/afro latina (just latina) until it was convenient and profitable for her, her ass was calling black women roaches and shit, so yeah. As light skinned as rihanna and halle berry are, they can't say they're not black(black mixed) and have people believe them, cardi's features are ambiguous and allowed her that.

Not to mention in many latin american country she would not be seen as "afro" not white but not "afro", and that's fine, there are more shades not just black and white.

re: the shift in the way she self-identifies, she's talked about how she had to educate herself on the distinctions between race, ethnicity, & nationality after the early interviews/comments on the topic she made bc she was conflating differing things and causing confusion (i think she used to call herself spanish iirc lol).

idk, it's possible it was just an opportunistic shift for branding reasons but i hesitate to approach the way people identify with skepticism or cynicism since it's all so complicated and it can be difficult to land on the terms that are most fitting, especially when there's so much confused discourse around it like there is in the US.

"cardi's features are ambiguous and allowed her that."

Ambiguous in what way? It's always been obvious to me that she is Black.

She’s not always right with some of her stuff but this woman is educated in a lot of areas and really knows how to get her point across. Good for her. Her political knowledge/passion alone is admirable.

she seems committed to growing as a person and making the world a better place (even though we roasted her for some terrible covid behaviors). and i feel like (except in this case) there's not really a financial motive for her to stick her neck out and speak up on stuff. i admire that

Yeah. She seems to enjoy learning things and openly expresses her ignorance and tries to fix it. More people in general should be like that.

I don’t know if it was here or somewhere else but someone tried to tell me that Hispanics co-opt black hairstyles for little girls and I was like... do you not know what Afro-Latina is? “Twisties” and braids are a small part of a very complex culture and identity.

She's right. And that person she responded to is an idiot. How can you tell an Afro-latina woman that she isn't what she is because you have stereotypes about hair texture?
