Of the 31 ceremonies (this one excluded), 21 of the winners won Best Picture. Those are pretty good odds for Nomadland to take it.

Yeah, in the last few weeks it's gone from "Any of these movies could win" to it most likely being the first clean sweep in Best Picture since Argo. I'm not mad though, Nomadland is more than deserving.

It also annoys me so much when people call this a weak season, when its actually been an extremely strong season full of movies that would otherwise not even get a look in at the Oscars. The only movies that were removed from the season were big Oscar bait productions (West Side Story, French Dispatch, etc) that would have sucked all the air out of the room, and we've even left with an amazing array of productions that are objectively much better films.

As a giant Wes Anderson fan I was (beyond just wanting to see the film) wondering at first whether The French Dispatch being moved was costing him a strong shot at winning an Oscar, but as things have developed I'm not sure whatever that film is about would have been a good fit for the tone of this pandemic-era awards race. Maybe next year, Wes!

Oh yeah, I have no doubt that had it remained in the season, then it probably would have been a huge contender, I do think Zhao's narrative in Director would be hard to beat though, but a Screenplay win would have been almost locked. It's also crazy how massive McDormand has become again within the industry in the last few years, she most likely would have had 3 nominations in Actress (Nomadland), Supporting Actress (French Dispatch) and Best Picture (producer of Nomadland). Regardless she's probably winning her 3rd Oscar this year....MAYBE even fourth if she wins SAG and BAFTA.
