I liked 300 well enough (which I understand is mostly due to how faithful it was to the comic, even in style), but how did that worship survive all of his other movies?

I haven't seen 300, but I can imagine that being part of his appeal. I also think a lot of his fanboys believe that Warner Brother's stifle his film making and if only they wouldn't intervene the DC movies would be as well liked as the MCU.

But I hated MoS and BvS, so I'm not sure why anyone would want more of that.

In Captain America and the Winter Soldier in Sam’s introduction he talks to Steve about not being able to sleep.

“It’s the mattress right? It’s like sleeping on a marshmallow. When I was over there I was sleeping on the ground and using a rock for my pillow.”

Basically that veterans returning from war have a hard time sleeping in conditions that are very different from what they got used to while fighting.

I took it as a call back to TWS when Sam and Steve have a little conversation about how mattresses are too soft for them since they had gotten used to sleeping on the ground while at war.
