the parents introduced a buddy system that effectively had the four oldest girls (jana, jill, jessa and jinger) paired with 2-3 of their younger siblings. the older girl would help the younger kids get dressed, eat, basically operate as a surrogate parent because michelle would be pregnant so often. michelle would be the full time parent until the newest baby was about 2, then hand it off to the next girl. someone found a list, i believe jill, for example was “buddy” to joy which is why a lot of people speculate that jill felt betrayed not when her parents shunned her, but when joy did. i think jessa is justin’s buddy.
