For those of us who experienced The Vampire Diaries at its peak (and the crazy people who are still hanging around for the spin-offs) and rooted for the best character on the show, Bonnie Bennett played by Kat Graham - the viewing and fandom experience was probably nothing short of traumatizingAnyway, over the years, people did try to defend

wow, i literally just saw this on tumblr two seconds ago.

i never watched this show, but how badly kat graham was treated was incredibly well known even among other fandoms

i've never seen this show in my life but i watched jenny nicholson's 2 hour retrospective (?) on it and it was astoundingly racist. like wow. and this show ended a mere 4 years ago.

It's so nuts to me that they got away with having a show about white confederate vampires and the only prominent Black character and her family being treated as disposable magical slaves (in fact some of Bonnie's ancestors were literal slaves owned by the white characters on the show) despite being the most powerful.

This show and Sleepy Hollow both provided some of my worst fandom/viewing experiences ever, probably.

i fell out when one of the few black men (and by far the most dark skin actor) ever to be on the show was cast as the actual devil

And what makes it even more ridiculous is they changed it from the books to MAKE the Salvatores Confederate soldiers and Bonnie's ancestors slaves. In the books, the Salvatores were turned during the Renaissance, and while Bonnie was white in the books, they could've had Kat play Bonnie and NOT made her witch ancestors a slave.

I was kinda fandom adjacent at the time, where a lot of people on my timeline were watching the show and I'd always see Julie Plec's tweets getting dragged. Good times.
