In today’s column I ask the most pressing issue of our time: why, exactly, is Angelina Jolie so famous? https://t.co/0QF0W3WIVr

The Guardian says it’s been years since Angelina was in a film worth watching, but she has made being a celebrity its own art form ( Read more... )

they aren't lying tbh. there are iconic angelina roles but she hasn't really been in a movie that's iconic outside of them. even though I do have soft spots for mr & mrs smith, salt, and hackers lol

I've been reading a lot of old hollywood biographies recently and I always wonder who in our time will seem more/less famous to future generations because of how well/poorly their filmography is remembered

Norma Shearer was the queen of MGM back in the 1930s, yet the average person now doesn't recognize her name comparison to stars like Judy Garland and Lana Turner. Although interesting to note Joan Crawford has very few iconic movies, yet is still a big name to the general public.

mmmmm, I could see angelina having a joan crawford-like afterlife. not in a 1:1 way but in that I think crawford is remembered more for being the character that had lots of affairs, feuded with bette davis, went mommie dearest etc. than she is for any of her individual films.

I wonder if part of that has to do with her retiring when she was 40 and staying out of the spotlight? Greta Garbo did the same thing though, so who's to say. It's always interesting to me who becomes a legend and who doesn't.

I think many of her roles are well-known and she is good in them though? Theyre not all blockbusters for sure but most of them arent flops right? Salt, Mr Mrs Smith, Wanted. Shes not the most egregious example, certainly not the example I would go to first.

Weren't the tomb raider films a success? I was(am) obsessed with them so my memory may be skewed lol

Hackers
Mr and Mrs Smith
Kung Fu Panda
Salt

Wanted????

Idk maybe I'm more of a fan of hers than I thought lol I always think of her as an actor first

I think people forget that no one did sexy action star like she did. were they amazing movies? no. But they did well enough to make a mark on pop culture.

Not a lot of women have ever been trusted to solely carry an action film like she has. Sigourney Weaver and Uma Thurman are the only ones that come to mind. you could throw in Milla Jovovich. The rest like Linda Hamilton, Lucy Liu, etc. were part of ensembles.

She's not the strongest actress by far but she could carry a movie an action movie by herself. Salt, Wanted, and Tomb Raider. They weren't insane successes but there is a reason why you think Lara Croft and you think of her not Alicia.

Honestly think Charlize Theron is a capable action/movie star as well. Overall better actress too, imo.

Hackers is amazing. It's like someone distilled the mid-90s into film form.
