More Buffy Folks Come Out Against Joss Whedon

Feb 12, 2021 21:40

While I will always be honored to have played the character of Spike, the Buffy set was not without challenges. I do not support abuse of any kind, and am heartbroken to learn of the experiences of some of the cast. I send my love and support to all involved.

All this sheds a horrifying new light in the characterization of Drusilla

And not the entire premise of the show Dollhouse?

Will never be able to watch it again.

I know Eliza has seen some shit over the years.

That show was grotesque from the outing and I remember arguing that with people who were so enthralled and defensive of its ~genius.

James Marsters can eat glass and we been knew David Boreanaz was trash. If feels telling though that Emily Deschanel responded and supported her though.

I’m also not surprised about Alyson, Alexis, and Amy being silent. They’ve been part of his little rat pack forever.

you can tell which ones have one eye on their pockets too.

I'm more bothered by the women tbh. I don't know whether to be sad, disturbed, disappointed, or upset. Also not surprised? That internalized misogyny is real. That and the combo of blatant selfishness. So you're good, that means you're going to let other women around you drown in this bullshit?

I’m glad Emily said something. Bones is still one of my favorite guilty pleasure shows and I’ve accepted David is trash, so at least I have one person to hang my hat onto...

So was this fool on his best behavior on the avengers set? Disney keep him in line? I’ve never heard anything bad about that set(besides how awful he wrote ultron) but that doesn’t mean anything of course...I hope this time the cancellation sticks and he won’t be in a position of power to hurt anyone again

He wasnt dealing with young adults who just broke into the business. Joss doesnt seem to try it with people who have some actual power to their names.

Master manipulators and monsters know how to pick their victims. I can believe Anthony Stewart Head really didn't know, (but like i said in the other post, this is also because of his privilege), because these abusers know which people they can treat like shit and which one will benefit them.

Gellar's husband made some comments along those lines. The problems between her and Joss seemed to crop up when she started using the power she had to stand up for herself.

“He thought being mean was funny. Making female writers cry during a notes session was especially hysterical.”

Joss once read a writer’s draft of an Angel episode and his note was “have you ever even seen the show??”

Not defending him, Whedon needs to diaf like, yesterday, esp if it’s only the women writers he enjoyed bringing to tears.

But being “snarky” back then seemed to be pretty much THE top fandom goal, the nastier the better, the more credit you’d get for being ~so smart lol. I mean, TWOP was literally built on the concept, and those TWOP episode recaps - which the Buffyverse writers absolutely DID read - went in on those writers way harder than “have u even watched the show” (which btw was something said @ least once every few recaps, esp toward the end of both shows). Obvs it’s worse coming directly from your boss, but he was absolutely emboldened by the fandom in being cruel to the writers.

I miss TWOP so much! pop culture isn't the same without it.

Having watched more than my share of so-so shows, I find the “have you ever even seen the show?" a valid criticism. If that's the note you're getting it means you might have repurposed an old script you had laying around or you didn't even try to write something coherent.

Making people cry however, isn't ok.

Ugh, It’s so hard for me to respond without giving details that aren’t mine to share or naming someone who hasn’t made any kind of public statement. But... it wasn’t a recycled plot or an incoherent mess. I got the feeling from the rest of the notes that it was more about the way that the characters spoke. At least that’s what the rest of the notes were. Joss crossed out dialogue and rewrote it VERY similar to the original. It felt deliberately mean.

I know without details to back me up all I say is just my opinion, but I promise if this writer says anything I’ll identify him

His Twitter went private months ago. He and JFD are friends irl and there was a joke about masks. David wears masks irl but the comment pile-on by those who didn’t know they’re friends and were joking were insane. So he made his account private but didn’t wipe it ( ... )
