Terrible that celebs felt they were so above all the idol folks just cause it was seen as an easy way to get famous. I think that was the common criticism at the time, that they were taking a shortcut to get in the business. Shitty reasoning to be an asshole to people.

i literally ran an "anti-avril" website where ppl could get blinkees and banners i'd made to put on their OWN websites to prove they were anti-avril and not fake punks!!! lol to be 13 years old with a geocities account again

People have been debating it for years. Was there a "shove"? Or was Avril merely wrenching away from an unwanted hug? Avril's head is blocking Kelly's face in the video, so her elbow could have made brief contact.
Nevertheless, in the Howard Stern interview, Kelly does describe it as an elbow to the face, and said, "Years later she saw me and she said, ‘Oh my gosh, I don’t know, people keep saying I elbowed you in the face, and I’m so sorry!’ … She did it, but I don’t know if she felt bad about it, or, like, she didn’t mean to do it or what. But it felt purposeful."
