The boat didn’t even have an anchor? How can they even rent boats out without those things? I know nothing about boating but I thought that’d be required 😕

I can only speak from my own boating experiences but I suppose there's always the possibility of something going wrong with the anchor. First of all it's pretty heavy and needs to be adequately tied to a rope and the rope to the boat. Obviously you can only anchor if you're in a place where the water is deep enough for the length of rope. The anchor can get stuck and try if you try to dislodge it with brute strength or by pulling it with the boat itself, it can lead to a dangerous situation. My in laws have a boat and once the anchor got stuck; we tried dislodging it with the boat itself and for a second there it felt like we were about to capsize.

the boat did not have floatation devices, a ladder, rope or an anchor.

jfc it's insane that that's not standard practice. i hope this results in meaningful change.

Yeah. I assume a place like cali would have that shit required at a state level.

This is really surprising tbh

I could have SWORN that it was state law to provide life jackets on boats for every person on board.

this whole situation is so terribly heartbreaking. i can't imagine how her family must feel, thinking that if the boat had had a ladder she might still be alive

Her death really makes me want to learn how to swim.

I hope her family protects her son from her Starbase. I'm sure they've dealt with a lot since she got famous

Do it! Learn to swim! If you have a YMCA near you, look into their classes. It's worth it to have peace of mind around bodies of water.

Do it! Besides safety, swimming is just really fun!

Of course swimming against a current is a whole different thing than in a pool but you gotta start somewhere.

Same. Me and my 8 year old son especially.

I hope her little guy is getting all the help he needs through this. I can't imagine the trauma.
