As a white southerner, by the time I would have been old enough to think to ask these questions, my grandparents were either dead or not themselves anymore due to aging.

But what I know about some of them, I wouldn’t have been proud of the answers. My dad is the middle child of five, he was born in 1941, and I can’t remember if it was him or one of his brothers, but they took the class out of school to see a body of a black man that had been extra-judiciously killed by the local police. So fucked up.
