I grew up poor and worked hard to make the money I have now, so yeah, when people talk down to me and act like I have a shitty job making no money and that i'm stupid because I chose a career as an admin, or make comments (although op clarified what they meant) about how being an admin assistant at 28 is "bleak," i am absolutely going to point out how stupid and wrong that idea is that you cant make good money in a field that assholes have decided is for dummies and idiots. i'm sorry you seem so affected by my salary tho!

I don't disagree that lots of poor people will work hard and never make six figures. My mom was 48 years old and making $36k while supporting three kids as a single mom. She worked harder than anyone I know and never made a lot of money. I'm fully aware that plenty of poor people are in similar boats. But I'm also not going to be ashamed of the fact that I was able to break the cycle in my family and make more for myself.

I also already explained exactly why I responded the way I did to the OP, who is also an EA and who understood completely. In fact, a couple of people commented saying they knew exactly what I was talking about and the demeaning shit we have to deal with in this role. I spent the last ten years being told I have a bullshit job and having people imply I'm not smart or am lazy or am just doing busy work or taking the easy way out, etc., so you know what, yeah, I have no problem telling those people to go fuck themselves and they're wrong. I'm sorry that you seem to be so bothered by this tho.

When I think of administrative assistant I think of someone with a college degree scraping by on 30k a year which is the reality in many fields
