ONTD, the numbers are in and show Smile is a certified flop, selling less than Witness so far. How would you revive Katy's faltering career? Or is it actually really over? :0)

She def has to revamp and rework her image. Probably bring back some of the colors and images from previous albums.

I wonder if growing out her hair and dying it back to black would help because that blonde hair I don't think was all that well-received (which is ironic since thats her natural).

The source tweet saying Smile dropped to 199 because of only selling 876 copies this week was just a joke tweet from some fan account.

Oh okay but did that merit a full post delete?

the problem with Smile is that it's just so boring and uninspired and she really needs to make a hard pivot into doing something else ( ... )

I agree after Teenage Dream the promo kept making us think she'd go into an alternative route but ultimately more safe singer-songwriter pop. She had her growth but its in very small dilute expressions.

I would love for her to go Jagged Little Pill.

Smile the song fully sounds like a JC Penny jingle

you’re not far off, it’s in a Target back to school commercial

I feel like people want her to move away from that hyper-pop full of ~uplifting platitudes, but maybe that's just her style and what she genuinally enjoys. I think her main problem with her past three albums is that there doesn't feel like a real theme or cohesion, or unique (for her) sound. Like for example, this new album doesn't have a identifiable sound that makes you say like "oh that song is from Smile" because a lot of it sounds it could have come from Witness or Prism.

Honestly I think if your dedicated fans like your sound, don't change it up too much. If she had just released Teenage Dream-like bop after bop she'd be just fine. It worked for Britney, Pink, Kelly Clarkson, Adele etc. All of their music (and singles especially) sound more or less the same. Pink's built her entire empire on it.

It's why Gaga/Xtina/Miley flopped when their sound changed too much.

Now TSwift, she's a mystery. I have no idea how she has such a strong hold on her fanbase despite the sonic changes.

>_> I was asking people what good songs Pink or Kelly has and some people here seemed offended lol. I stopped listening to them in middle school and from what I can tell, their sound hasn't really changed?? Sure there are a few good songs but...damn their fanbase is loyal.

there was this scathing line in a Katy Perry album review about Pink:

"...full of the kind of generic, empty platitudes that have kept P!nk with a roof over her head for over 20 years, like the Dalai Lama recast as a suburban Wine Mom."

I died.
