This is my take too and to be honest I’ll take it. Not everybody wants to listen to sad or serious music in the middle of a pandemic. There’s a reason that so many people got tik tok accounts during quarantine. There’s nothing wrong with being silly and if she wants to continue doing the same thing and ~not grow~ let her do it.
If I didn't know any better, I would say their major complaint is that she doesn't sound depressed. The songs are too happy?? Well excuse her for having a child and currently loving her life-do you want to fuck off and come back to her when she's heartbroken again or something? or is it her having the audacity to still be so vibrant despite her age??
Anyway, so I liked Champagne Problems, Cry About it Later, Teary Eyes, Tucked, and of course Harlys in Hawaii. Smiley is cute too. I get that it's a pandemic but I'm not the type to turn on a sad fucking song to stare out the window to in the rain. Like get over it buddy, if you want to sulk then by all means pick a The Used album or something. Entire genres dedicated to being miserable.
Reminds me how critics were salivating for a depressed, dark, moody, and sad album from Kylie after she got done from treatment dealing with breast cancer, and Kylie's response was bitch I want to be happy and only think of sparkles and rainbows.
i'm glad Katy is actually in a happy place but a lot of those songs reminded me more of breakup songs while trying be happy through the pain, especially Teary Eyes and Cry About it Later.
I just wish it was good fun pop, like Carly or Kylie, and not boring average pop.
