I can't get over what a weird move this is. I’m not saying there weren’t people worthy of being awarded this season (Congrats to Adrienne Warren and Danny Burstein who will surely win) but so much about the Tonys is being a giant commercial for Broadway. None of the shows will really benefit from the publicity months, maybe a year, before Broadway reopens.

That being said, I’m super curious how the format will be. Categories will definitely be scrapped as only The Lightning Thief would be eligible for score and West Side Story, who would have been the only one eligible, opened too close to the shutdown. Then there are the acting categories, most of which will be reduced, especially Leading Actor, with so many musicals led by women this year, I wouldn’t be surprised if they scrapped the category or got rid of gender categories altogether this year. Plays should be able to do all categories though.

I get that they want to recognize the shows that debuted, and they should, but I don't see how a ceremony makes sense when so many - like at least 10, right? if not more? (lol ONTD doesn't read, you said 16 right there) - of this year's would-be competitors are not eligible. It's not like TV where there are a shit ton of options - there are only so many Broadway shows happening in the span of a year.

I only care if Will Chase is somehow involved in anything.

I get why they’re doing this but doing this in the autumn and hoping that the PR from the awards will help when reopening of broadway is underway in spring 2021 is too optimistic to think the pandemic would be over then.

I guess it’s going to be one long commercial for Moulin Rouge, Jagged Little Pill and Tina? I think they’ll also have the shows that were supposed to be opening “perform” or feature in some way. Idk it’s kinda stupid to have people winning when there’s literally like ... two leading male actors in the entire category, and the people who win, others will probably think it was an “easy” win.

But I’m looking forward to it, it will be good to bring awareness to the overall broadway/theatre community in these hard times regardless of what happens with the the actual awards and to bring the entire community together in 2020 on a national scale, I think that’s needed to give everyone hope, and I don’t think there’s a perfect solution in terms of when to schedule the awards so yeah.
