"In 1957, in New York City, there were a lot of Black people walking around," he said. "But unfortunately, when they created the original version there weren't a lot of Black people in it."
It is. Way off. Reminds me of the times when GIRLS came out and they were like oh black people and people of color are in the background yada yada but we were not at least visible(?). Esp there weren’t black women on that show nor any one ever interacted with them. Until Riz and Donald Glove, moc, popped in and they were like "SEE!!! HERE A POC IN MY ALL-WHITE NYC ESCAPADE"
so I dunno if Steve came off genuine other than trying to gain points for diversity (aka the token black person)
he's deviating the attention to the point: "back in the day they were more obvious about the whitewashing and racism, not like today, we're more subtle about it"
This is really dumb of me but I watched the movie for the first time during quarantine and I only then realised that the “West Side” in “West Side story” was referring to the Upper West Side lmao.
Also maybe v unpopular opinion but I was very underwhelmed by the original movie. I hated the actor who played Tony, I read that he had a dance and singing double and it felt like he needed an acting double too.

You still gave the lead to an overrated piece of raping shit...
How the fuck does this dude keep getting roles? Oh right, he's a mediocre white dude that gets unlimited chances at sucking just because...
